5 Reasons You'll Love Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort in Orlando, Florida

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort in Orlando, Florida

For the record I’ve got nothing against the classic Disney World resorts. I’m down with Disney’s Polynesian and Contemporary Resorts, Even Yacht and Beach Club. But gosh dang it, I’m sick of seeing hard working families toss aside one of Disney’s most beautiful hotels just because they think it’s too far from the parks. It’s by far the most unique hotel experience you’ll have without leaving the country and it’s right here at Walt Disney World! It’s also one of the cheaper Deluxe Resorts, not much more than some Moderate category hotels. To that end, here are 5 reasons to stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Resort.

Authentic Africa - Disney Style

From the moment you pass the gates you’re immediately transformed into a whole new world. The lush landscaping has been carefully cultivated to resemble an African savanna. Here’s a Disney secret - the planting started two years before the resort opened so it had time to grow and mature. This gives the illusion that the plants and trees had always been there. Drive a little further and the towering thatched roof of the main lobby comes into view. At that moment you realize this is a very different kind of Disney resort. Upon entering the lobby you’ll discover rich woods, golden tones, and authentic African art throughout. There are over 380 museum-quality pieces throughout the hotel and over 4,000 handcrafted works of art in the guest rooms. A mud fireplace is always warm and giant floor-to-ceiling windows provide spectacular views of the animal savanna.

74 Acres of African Savanna

True, Animal Kingdom Lodge is remote, it’s built on 74 acres right in the middle of its own savanna. Surrounding the resort is an animal sanctuary with over 200 mammals and birds like zebra, giraffe, and impala that live authentically in the recreated African savannas. So the fact that this hotel is remote, is perhaps its very best feature! It’s an escape from the excitement and high energy of the theme parks. Here it’s quiet, tranquil, and relaxing. Yes, it’s possible to feel relaxed on your Disney World vacation! And speaking of location, let’s not forget that it’s very close to Animal Kingdom Theme Park including Pandora World of Avatar, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Blizzard Beach.

Dining is a Culinary Journey

The signature restaurant, Jiko - The Cooking Place, is one of Florida’s most notable restaurants having won numerous awards and has the most South African Wines than any other restaurant in the United States. Boma is one of the most popular restaurants at Walt Disney World - it features an open kitchen, a wood-burning grill (that smells terrific from outside) and an incredible buffet. Victoria Falls is the mezzanine lounge that sits just above Boma and serves up specialty coffee, tea, South African vintage wines, international beers, and cocktails.

Jiko - The Cooking Place at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Handcrafted Rooms

Each of the lodge’s rooms feature handcrafted furniture and art — much of it made in Zimbabwe.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of two Deluxe Resorts that offers the option of bunk beds in many of the guestrooms. Also offered throughout the resort are standard rooms with 2 queen beds or 1 king-bed.

Upgraded room categories include one and two bedroom suites and Club-level (concierge) rooms. It’s worth noting that the Club-level lounge is one of the highest rated among all of the Walt Disney World Deluxe Resorts.

Wildlife Reserve

I know, this all sounds great but what about the animals! For the absolute best experience, try to be up just before sunrise (that’s early and you’re on vacation, but trust me it’s worth it). There are over 200 animals that live at Animal Kingdom Lodge and they become vocal and active just as the sky begins to turn brighter. And here’s a secret,  you don’t need to stay in a savanna view room to enjoy views of animals. There are several outdoor overlooks around the resort with prime viewing locations. There are also several animal and authentic cultural experiences and tours that are offered exclusively to Animal Kingdom Lodge guests.

Disney World Offers Lower Priced Ticket

Disney World offers a new, discounted 4-day Theme Park ticket for 2019

Disney World offers a new, discounted 4-day Theme Park ticket for 2019

Beginning January 18, 2019 Walt Disney World will introduce a new, lower-priced 4-Day Theme Park Ticket, offering admission to one Theme Park per day. The 4-Park Magic Ticket will allow guests to visit each of the four Walt Disney World Theme Parks over a four day period at a discounted price.

Is this an Actual Discount on Walt Disney World Tickets?

Yes. The discount over a regular-priced 4-day Magic Your Way Base ticket ranges from $2 per ticket, per day to as much as $17 per ticket, per day. The deepest discounts are in the months of February and March and late May.

For example:

A Four Day Magic Your Way Base Ticket on May 23 will cost an adult (age 10+) $443. A 4-Day Magic Value Ticket will cost $356, a savings of $87.

How is the 4-Day Magic Value Ticket Different from a 4-Day Base Ticket?

This is a ticket-only offer, meaning you’ll have to purchase your hotel room and ticket separately. Not a problem since both will be linked in your My Disney Experience account. You can still make FastPasses 60-days in advance as long as you hold a Disney World resort hotel reservation.

A regular-priced 4-day Base Ticket allows you to choose which parks you would like to visit. If you wanted to visit Magic Kingdom twice and Epcot twice, you can do that.

But the 4-day Magic Value ticket is one admission to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park; you cannot make repeat visits to the same park on this ticket.

The 4-Day Magic Value Ticket must be paid for in full at time of purchase, and is non refundable once purchased. When tickets are purchased as part of a package, you can cancel for a full refund within the cancellation policy guidelines. Usually 30-days prior to arrival, or 5-days prior to arrival, depending on your package type.

Disney's Newest Hotel Lacks Imagination

Disney’s Gran Destino Tower resembles the now defunct, Aladdin Hotel and Casino is Las Vegas.

Disney’s Gran Destino Tower resembles the now defunct, Aladdin Hotel and Casino is Las Vegas.

Disney has recently announced that bookings for the new Gran Destino Tower will become available on November 27, 2019. The resort officially opens in July 2019, but no work yet on an exact date.

I’ve been writing about Disney for over a decade and have always been impressed with Disney’s projects. But I can’t help but think this hotel lacks true Disney imagination. Is it just me or does Gran Destino Tower look like the defunct Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas? At the very least, it looks like a Holiday Inn. Is this the best Disney Imagineers could do?

I think Disney is known for building amazing and unique hotels. Think about Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, the Polynesian refurbishment, and even Art of Animation. These resorts represent the Disney Difference, truly unique hotels with over-the-top attention to detail, especially in regards to time and place.

So what happened with Gran Destino Tower?

DISNEY: EPCOT'S ILLUMINATIONS COMING TO AN END

Illuminations Reflections of Earth will end in 2019.

Illuminations Reflections of Earth will end in 2019.

The fireworks and laser show that has entertained guests at Epcot for decades is coming to end sometime in the second half of 2019, according to Walt Disney World Resort. Details are limited on the replacement but some rumors suggest that it will involve drones while others suggest it will utilize technology similar to that of World of Color at Disney’s California Adventure.

The closing of Illuminations Reflections of Earth has been anticipated as work could be seen going on in the lagoon area where the show takes place.

"... We’ve got big plans for our multi-year transformation of Epcot, with new experiences that will ‘Wow!’ guests while keeping true to the original vision of the park,” the Disney said.

Epcot is getting even more attractions including a Ratatouille ride in the France Pavilion, opening in 2021. Construction of a Guardians of the Galaxy themed roller coaster is underway near the former Universe of Energy Pavilion and that too is scheduled to open in 2021. Plus, Disney is building the Skyliner, a new gondola transportation system that will bring guests from several resort hotels to Epcot and Hollywoods Studios.

What are your thoughts on the closing of Illuminations? Sad to see it go or looking forward to something new?

Best Dates to Attend Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

If you're looking for the least crowded times to experience the Halloween Party, generally dates in August, September and early October are best. Crowds are always larger on weekends.

In general, higher priced admission tickets usually means the party is expected to have larger crowds.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party does indeed sell out on some nights, especially on Oct 31 so it's best to purchase your tickets well in advance.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party 2018 Tickets

Advance tickets start at $75 for adults and $70 for children ages 3-9 (plus tax). Day-of tickets start at $85 for adults and $80 for children ages 3-9 (plus tax). Purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended.

    Arriving at the Party

Guests of all ages are welcome to dress in costume on party nights. Be sure to check out the Costume Guidelines Page, it has critical information about what can / cannot be worn.

As you arrive, grab a treat bag for trick-or-treating and pick up a party event map, which displays all the locations of trick-or-treat stations, special entertainment and more.

Head to the Main Street Fire Station and pick up an event-exclusive Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom spell card. This year’s design features Orange Bird, how cool is that!

Don't miss the “Boo To You” parade, which is offered twice on party nights. The Headless Horseman is the star of the show and one of the coolest things to see, so don't be late! He leads off the procession, which includes classic Disney characters (in not-so-scary Halloween costumes), plus an entire portion of the parade is devoted to the Haunted Mansion. That's a crowd fav!

The Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular” stage show delights Guests by bringing the Sanderson Sisters back for the evening, calling on Disney villains to help them conjure the ultimate Hocus Pocus Party Potion.

Disney Villains light up the night during “Happy HalloWishes Fireworks.” This spectacular features a villainous soundtrack with songs like “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” “Never Smile at a Crocodile” and more.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party FAQ

Q: Are there any restrictions on the kinds of costumes that can be worn?

A: Be sure to read the full Costume Guidelines Page but in short, costumes that are grotesque, obscene, suggest violence or are otherwise inappropriate for a family-friendly atmosphere are prohibited. Face masks on those age 14 and up are not allowed. Children and adults may dress as a favorite character but they cannot sign autographs or pose for photos. Disney Cast Members will monitor costumes carefully throughout the night.

Q: Where is the best place to watch the Halloween Parade?

A: Main Street USA is the best place to view the parade. Be sure to arrive 45-60 minutes prior to the parade to get a good spot. If you don't mind getting there even earlier, try the second floor of the Main Street railroad station. You'll have a terrific view of the parade and Cinderella Castle.

Q: can I make FastPass Selections for rides during the party?

A: No. FastPass queues will be closed at the start of the party. There's so much to see and do, that you probably won't have time for many rides anyway. As you might imagine, Haunted Mansion will be super popular on party nights so be prepared for a longer than normal wait.

Q: If I enter the park at 4 p.m. can I make FastPass selections?

A: You can make FastPass selections only if you also have general admission ticket to Magic Kingdom Park. If you have only the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party ticket, you can of course enter at 4 p.m., but you will not be able to make FastPass selections.

Q: Once the park closes, how will Disney know I have a Mickey's Not So Scary Party Ticket?

A: There will be several kiosks located in the park where you can swipe your Magic Band to obtain a wristband. The wristband will signal Cast Members that you have a valid party ticket and you'll be permitted to stay in the park. There is also a dedicated entrance that you can use if you're not already inside the park.

Q: Can I bring my own Halloween trick or treat bag?

A: Sure, and it's a good idea to do so!

If you have any other questions about the party, feel free to use the comments section below.
